About Conchology Shell Plate
Conchology Shell Plate is drawn from the great Enlightenment shell books — Regenfuss, d'Argenville, Knorr — where spiral mollusc forms were cut into copper with the burin and pulled in sepia ink onto hand-laid rag paper. Every tone is built from line: cross-hatching for shadow, stippling for relief, the bare paper for highlight.
Two and a half centuries later the sheets have toned and foxed to a deep aged parchment. That darkened ground, not a fresh cream sheet, is the signature. This system keeps the monochrome discipline of the engraver — one ink, many lines, no saturated colour — and treats the paper itself as the warmest surface in the palette.
