This is the storybook page of the original 1926 Winnie-the-Pooh — not the later saturated cartoon, but E.H. Shepard's loose sepia-ink pen line floating in acres of untouched white paper. A single confident contour drawing of a bear, a tree, a jar of honey sits in breathing space, with warm honey-gold used sparingly like a spot of afternoon sun.

The whole system lives on the white gap. Chapter openers borrow the cartographer's hand of the Hundred Acre Wood endpaper — hand-lettered place names, a wobbly compass rose, dotted trails. It says: leave most of the page empty, put one gentle ink drawing in it, and let a child's imagination fill the rest.
