Čičmany Painted House Ornament

ProMax

Čičmany is a Slovak mountain village whose dark weathered timber cottages have been hand-painted with chalky lime-white geometric ornament — crosses, combs, hearts, and pinwheels — unchanged since about 1825. The whitewash began as protection for cracked larch wood, then elaborated into a living folk grammar of angular line.

This system inverts the lazy instinct: the GROUND is dark stained timber, and the warm chalky white is the ornament painted on top. Strict geometry, matte brushwork, and hand-drawn type carry that whitewashed-cottage spirit into the screen.
