Malian Bogolan over Djenné Indigo

ProMax

Bambara women paint fermented river-mud onto strip-woven cotton, then over-dye the ground in deep Djenné indigo so the negative space reads black-blue and the mud reads burnt umber. This design system reverses the conventional cream bogolan reading — the cloth is read at night, by lamplight, with indigo as the deep ground and mud as the writing.
