About Kaunas Interwar Modernism
Kaunas spent twenty years as a capital it never expected to be, and built like it. Banks, post offices and apartment blocks went up in cubic volumes of pale artificial-stone render, warm sand rough-cast, pink granite plinths and dark bronze frames — modernism without the manifesto.
This system takes that surface literally. Flat rendered planes, hairline joints instead of shadow, condensed caps cut like facade lettering, and a grid held as strictly as a window band across a street elevation.
