About Bucharest Interwar Modernism
Between the wars Bucharest stopped calling itself Little Paris and built a white Balkan city instead. Horia Creangă's ARO block of 1929–31 set the terms on Boulevard Magheru: a pale plaster mass, long horizontal glazing bands, no cornice, no ornament, a cinema cut into its base.
A century of city soot has taken that white down to a weathered mid-grey, and the ochre render shows through where the plaster has gone. This system works in that register — matte fields, hard shadow, strict horizontals, and a single red marquee band held back for the one label that matters.
