Barbadian Chattel House

ProMax

The Barbadian chattel house is a portable single-storey timber dwelling that emerged among emancipated workers in the late 19th century. Sitting on loose coral-stone blocks, these modular 12-by-16-foot structures could be disassembled and moved between plantations.

Painted in clean primary colours — coral pink, mint green, sky blue, sun yellow — with white-trimmed jalousie shutters and fretwork gable ornament, the chattel house embodies a joyful, symmetric, handmade Caribbean vernacular that feels like a wooden-toy village under endless blue sky.
