Borobudur Andesite Gray

ProMax

Borobudur is the great 9th-century Mahayana stupa of Central Java, raised by the Sailendra dynasty from roughly 55,000 cubic metres of volcanic andesite quarried near the Progo River. Its terraces carry more than two and a half kilometres of carved narrative relief — a stone scripture read by circumambulation.

This design system distils that stone: a cool, dark andesite gray with a faint mossy-green cast, deep near-black recesses where carving cuts deepest, and the soft lichen patina that maintenance crews brush from the wet-season surface. Monumental carved serifs stand in for the chiselled inscriptions; everything stays grayscale, weathered, and grave.
