ZERO Group — Cover

About ZERO Group

ZERO started in a Düsseldorf studio in 1958, when Heinz Mack and Otto Piene decided painting needed a clean restart: no image, no gesture, only light, movement and the monochrome surface. Günther Uecker joined in 1961 and brought the nail relief.

This system treats the screen as white-painted board under raking light. Surfaces sit raised, shadows fall hard and from one side, and the picture comes from relief. Piene's fire vermilion shows up exactly once.
