NSK / Laibach Retro-Avantgarde

ProMax

Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) and its musical core Laibach built a severe red-black-white "retro-avantgarde" from 1984 onward in socialist Slovenia. A black Malevich-derived cross and an industrial cog float on stark matte-black grounds, deployed as totalitarian pastiche.

The signature is the black cross printed on matte concert backdrops, album sleeves, and gallery walls, punctuated by a single cold blood-red accent — never cream, never soft. The look weaponizes symmetry, heavy rules, and stencil grotesque to interrogate the iconography of power.
