About Yemeni Mukarras Vault
The muqarnas vault is Islamic architecture's most intricate three-dimensional ornament — a frozen cascade of tiny geometric cells projecting downward from domes and archways. Yemen's Sana'a Old City preserves the tradition's densest, most delicate variant: hand-carved gypsum cells painted in cream, terracotta, and indigo, assembled into honeycomb ceilings that transform flat surfaces into computational geometry in stone.
This system translates that sacred materiality into interface design: warm cream plaster grounds, terracotta accents drawn from mud-brick construction, indigo details echoing hand-painted cell ornament, and gold-leaf moments for gilded emphasis.
