About Xhosa Umbhaco
Umbhaco starts as a white cotton blanket and ends as a rust-brown field, the ochre rubbed in by hand until the weave holds it unevenly. Narrow black wool strips cross it edge to edge; between them run counted rows of white glass seed beads and courses of mother-of-pearl buttons.
The system takes that structure literally. Ochre is the page, white is the figure, black banding does the dividing, and nothing curves except a bead. Layouts read horizontally, the way the cloth wraps.
