About Baluchari Saree
The Baluchari is a figured silk sari from Bengal in which the storytelling is woven, never printed. Its zami — the deep field — is dark purple-wine silk scattered with small butis marching in strict diagonal rows, plain between them. All the narrative gathers in the pallu, a wide terminal band of framed rectangular panels.
Those panels are the reason the cloth matters. Beside epic scenes they record the colonial century as the weavers actually saw it: nawabs on bolsters, hookah smokers, Europeans mid-conversation, trains and steamboats. The figures are built from discrete weft floats, so every diagonal edge steps rather than slides. This system keeps that discipline.
