Cruz-Diez Physichromie — Cover

About Cruz-Diez Physichromie

Carlos Cruz-Diez built the Physichromie as a light trap. Vertical separator strips stand proud of a black support; narrow colour plaques sit in the channels between them. Reflected light mixes additively at the seam, so the colour changes as the viewer walks past.

This system takes that literally. Black is structural, not stylistic — it is the ground the additive effect needs. Colour arrives as narrow adjacent bands at a fixed pitch, never as a flat wash. Type is grotesque, edges are machined, and nothing interpolates.
