About Udmurt Monisto
A monisto is a breast ornament worn by southern Udmurt women: real silver coins, pierced and sewn in overlapping courses onto a panel of bright red kumach cotton, trimmed with braid and velvet and pinned over the white linen dérém tunic. It is jewellery and account book at once — the family's silver, worn where everyone can count it, ringing with every step.
The design system takes that literally. Silver is always the figure and red cloth always the ground. Panels hang from a fixed top edge and overlap downward like roof shingles; braid runs as hard horizontal bands; nothing floats. Weight, density and a plain accounting of value carry the whole thing.
