Ugandan Mutuba Barkcloth

ProMax

Olubugo — Ugandan bark cloth — is made by beating the inner bark of the mutuba fig tree with grooved wooden mallets until it stretches into wide terracotta-orange sheets. For over six centuries the Baganda people have refined this craft, draping kings at coronation and wrapping the departed at burial.

This design system channels the raw warmth of hand-beaten barkcloth: irregular fiber texture, terracotta ground, sparse composition where material itself is the pattern. It draws from UNESCO-inscribed heritage and the modern revival led by designers like José Hendo.
