Things to Come (1936)

Things to Come (1936), produced by Alexander Korda and directed by William Cameron Menzies, imagined the year 2036 as Everytown — a gleaming Art Moderne city built underground from white plaster, Plexiglas, Lucite, and glass.

On black-and-white film these materials read as a luminous silver-grey: severe, spacious, inornate. The closing sequence was praised as "an art deco poem in gleaming silver and grey," and this design system distills that clean, streamlined, utopian luminosity.
