Kazan Tatar Tilework — Cover

About Kazan Tatar Tilework

Kazan's Old Tatar Sloboda builds one way: matte lime-plaster walls, deep turquoise-green glaze set into them as bands and spandrels, gilded crescents, a slender minaret against a low horizontal mass. The ornament is Volga Bulgar — above all the tulip, cut as windows and repeated through every frieze.

This system keeps that ratio. White plaster is the ground and carries the reading; glaze is the figure and stays a border, a header block, a rule. Gold appears once per view. Nothing is tiled edge to edge.
