About Kurbits Dalarna Painting
Dalmålning was painted on paper and coarse väv glued over the log walls of Dalarna farmhouses, in limfärg — chalk, water, glue, pigment — so a scheme ran the whole length of a room and stopped only at a ruled yellow border. Out of the kurbits, the gourd vine, grows a flower no botanist can name: it swells until it fills the picture, and Bible figures walk through it in the wool coats and aprons of a Swedish farm.
The system takes that literally. Chalk ground, flat brush-drawn colour, no blends. Every panel is boxed and captioned with a hand-lettered inscription strip. Density is the point — the wall was painted corner to corner, and so is the page.
