Shweshwe is South Africa's discharge-printed indigo cotton — saturated indigo, chocolate or rust grounds bleached with fine all-over geometric repeats of stars, diamonds, paisleys, and leaf-vines. Originally imported from European mills in the 1840s and adopted by Basotho, Xhosa, Sotho, and Tswana communities for ceremonial dress, it carries the name of King Moshoeshoe I.
The discipline is strict: a single saturated ground plus a fine white pattern field, small-tile module, no isolated large motif. Today Da Gama Textiles in Zwelitsha produces the only authentic local cloth under the Three Cats brand-mark, and contemporary designers like Laduma Ngxokolo carry the cloth into the present.
