About Solentiname Primitivism
In 1966 the poet-priest Ernesto Cardenal moved to Mancarrón, the largest island of the Solentiname archipelago, and the farmers and fishermen around him began painting the lake they already knew. The pictures are small oils packed edge to edge with jungle foliage — thousands of separately painted leaves — with birds, flowers, thatched houses and gospel figures laid flat on top.
Nothing recedes. Colour stays unmodulated across every plane, so a leaf at the back burns as hot as the bird at the front, and scale follows importance rather than distance. This system keeps that grammar: dark saturated ground, hard outlined shapes, no gradient anywhere, and no empty margin left unpainted.
