Three hundred metres beneath the Naica mine, in a 58°C chamber flooded with humidity, giant selenite gypsum beams — some 11.4m long — cross the darkness like translucent bone. Discovered in 2000, the Cave of the Crystals reads as milky luminous white against limestone so dark it is nearly black.
This system takes that ground literally. The page is dark brown-black rock; the milky crystal white is the primary luminous form. Type is carved and austere, surfaces read as faceted and translucent, and light behaves like a lamp in a cave — pooling on crystal faces, falling off into deep shadow.
