Seapunk surfaced in May 2011 when @LILINTERNET tweeted about a dream involving a leather jacket adorned with seaweed, birthing an entire Tumblr micro-movement overnight. The aesthetic hijacked early-90s nautical CGI — dolphins, palm trees, marble busts, Yin-Yang symbols — and ran it through GIF-compressed, turquoise-drenched irony with total sincerity.
At its peak the style leaked into mainstream pop when Rihanna's 2012 SNL performance borrowed seapunk visuals wholesale, sparking a minor internet controversy. This design system captures the original Tumblr-era density: layered clip-art, water-gradient backgrounds, chrome-beveled text, and Comic Sans as a deliberate aesthetic choice.
