About Studio Alchimia Anti-Design

Studio Alchimia was the Milanese Anti-Design collective that declared Modernism dead and replaced it with decoration, kitsch, and irony. Founded by Alessandro Guerriero in 1976 with Mendini, Sottsass, Branzi and De Lucchi, it preceded and birthed Memphis.

Its manifesto was Mendini's 1978 Bauhaus Redesigned show — Mies and Breuer chairs smothered in pointillist dots and squiggles. The aesthetic clashes pastels that "shouldn't go together," mixes serif, chunky display and hand-drawn fonts in one block, and treats every surface as an excuse for ornament.
