About Sámi Drum Symbols
A goavddis is a shallow bowl hollowed from a pine or birch burl, headed with untanned reindeer rawhide and drawn on with chewed alder bark. The extract dries red-brown on greasy pale skin, so the whole visual logic of this system is dark figures on a light page.
Every drumhead is a working diagram, not decoration. The membrane is partitioned into zones and populated with reindeer, boats, lávvu tents and sun signs; a brass pointer travels across the drawing while the drum is struck. Zones, legible marks, worn pigment — nothing crisp.
