Russian Onion Domes

The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Theotokos at Suzdal lifts deep azure onion domes, scattered with gold five-point stars, above whitewashed limestone walls. The blue is heaven; the stars are the Star of Bethlehem. This is the canonical silhouette of Russian Orthodox architecture.

This system speaks in that register — saturated cobalt grounds, gilt-gold ornament, lime-white stone as figure ground, and the polychrome greens and reds of St Basil's. Cyrillic-capable serifs carry the Slavonic weight; painted script accents recall lettering gilded onto the domes themselves.
