About Russian Khokhloma关于 Russian Khokhloma
Khokhloma is the Russian wood-painting tradition of jet-black lacquer overlaid with antique gold, crimson berries, and curling vines — a sacred peasant maximalism born in 17th-century Old Believer villages along the Volga. Tin powder, linseed oil, and high-temperature firing turn the black ground into fired gold, which painters then cover with kudrina curls, travka grass, rowan berries, and the firebird.
This system reads as firelight on polished lacquer: every surface is warm, ornate, and symmetrically full. Serif and blackletter Cyrillic-friendly typography, hand-painted brush wobble, and tiered decorative borders stand in place of empty space. Nothing about Khokhloma is minimalist — ornament is the message.
