Peter Saville's 1978–1992 work for Factory Records treated record sleeves as conceptual art. The Unknown Pleasures cover used Harold Craft's plot of pulsar CP 1919 with no band name and no album title. Blue Monday's 12" sleeve was die-cut to resemble a floppy disk. No logos, no marketing, no rules — only an intellectual austerity that rewarded recognition.
The aesthetic is void black, pure white, slate blue, and muted rose. Classical serifs meet modernist sans, tagged by monospace catalog numbers in Factory's FAC numbering system. Ornament is absent; the work says, "if you know, you know."
