About Napier Art Deco Rebuild

Napier fell down on a Tuesday morning in February 1931 and went back up by 1933 — 111 buildings, almost all of them Art Deco, almost all of them two storeys, because nobody in Hawke's Bay wanted height again.

The result is a street of oxide-tinted cement stucco: biscuit and ochre fields, pink and green and powder-blue panels, cream relief ornament, and kowhaiwhai koru curves pressed into deco cornices. Low, wide, painted, and still standing.
