About MTV Launch Identity (1981)关于 MTV Launch Identity (1981)

MTV's 1981 launch identity was the first brand designed to be vandalized. Manhattan Design — Pat Gorman, Frank Olinsky, Patti Rogoff — drew a chunky block "M" with "TV" scratched across it as a container that could be zebra-striped, drip-painted, set on fire, or polka-dotted every five seconds.

Under creative director Fred Seibert, the logo rejected corporate consistency and said "I want my MTV" in whatever voice the hour demanded. The palette clashes on purpose: hot pink, acid green, cobalt, electric yellow, orange, and black, collided on VHS-resolution screens with hand-scrawled marker, halftone dots, and spray paint.
