About Mars Sample Curation Lab
A curation cleanroom is not a laboratory set. It is white epoxy floor coving, 316L stainless gloveboxes purged with high-purity nitrogen, polycarbonate windows, Viton seals, and three layers of glove between a hand and a rock. JSC has run this for lunar material since 1969 across seven rooms from ISO 7 down to ISO 4.
Mars Sample Return adds a contradiction the design has to carry: COSPAR Category V Restricted Earth Return means keeping Earth out of the sample and the sample out of Earth at the same time. So the system reads in two registers — the clean, gridded manifest, and the blaze-orange hazard plate that marks where containment begins.
