About Gule Wamkulu Mask
Gule Wamkulu is the Great Dance of the Chewa Nyau brotherhood — masked spirit characters who arrive at initiations, funerals and installations. Its object is a carved hardwood face: dense oily timber darkened by hearth soot, whitened with clay, worn above a body built from dried maize husks and woven grass.
This system inherits that order exactly. The ground is wood. Everything legible sits on top of it as chalk, husk-buff or red paint. Type carries carved mass rather than costume, rules are woven fibre bands instead of hairlines, and surfaces keep their adze marks. Light never becomes the page; it stays a substance applied to dark.
