About Greenlandic Kalaallisuut
Kalaallisuut is the West Greenlandic national dress, and its centre is the nuilarmiut — a shoulder collar carrying tens of thousands of glass seed beads on satin or red woollen stroud thick enough to hold the weight. Black sealskin trim and dark trousers sit under it; white kamiks sit below.
The beadwork is not a picture. It is horizontal bands of solid colour in varying widths, mirrored left and right about the neck opening, with light and dark alternating to a rule the seamstress never breaks. This system inherits that rule: colour arrives in bands, and every change is abrupt.
