About La Tène Celtic Metalwork
La Tène is the ornament of Iron Age Europe worked directly into metal: sheet bronze raised from behind with a hammer until triskeles, S-scrolls and lyre-palmettes stand proud of the field, then set with cells of opaque red glass standing in for imported coral.
The objects that survive came out of rivers — the Battersea and Witham shields from the Thames and the Witham, carrying a dull green patina from their burial. Everything curves. Ornament radiates from a central boss rather than repeating on a grid, and no two halves are quite the same.
