Ghanaian Highlife

ProMax

Ghanaian Highlife is the visual language of palm-wine-bar signboards and post-independence dance-band record sleeves: a marigold-yellow field carrying vivid grass green, vivid red and orange, with chunky hand-painted display lettering inked by trained sign-writers. It is festive, high-contrast and proudly un-corporate.

Born around the E.T. Mensah era and Decca West Africa's famous 'yellow label', the look celebrates a brand-new national pop culture. Lettering is inventive rather than uniform; portraits are hand-illustrated; color blocks are flat and saturated. The result reads as music you can hear before you read it.
