Hawaiian appliqué quilting takes a single saturated plant motif — breadfruit, lehua, pineapple — cut from folded fabric like a paper snowflake, then lays it flat on a white cotton ground. Around that one shape, concentric rows of hand-stitching ripple outward like water, echoing its contour to the edge of the quilt. The whole language is two colors: one bold solid on white, the way kapa reds and yellows were once reserved for ali'i.
