About Finnish Ryijy
A ryijy is long knotted wool pile tied over a linen warp. The field is left the colour the sheep came in — lampaanharmaa, lamb's-grey — and the work goes into the concentric bands that frame it. Each Ghiordes knot takes three strands, so every colour area drifts shade by shade instead of sitting flat.
This system keeps that structure: a grey wool ground, plain centres carrying nothing, borders with real width, and figures stepped because a knot grid quantises every diagonal. Bands do the work that whitespace usually does.
