Chess City Elista — Cover

About Chess City Elista

City Chess was raised on bare Kalmyk steppe in fourteen months so that Elista could host an Olympiad. A domed aluminium hall sits at the centre; eighty-seven white cottages ring it; the ground between them is poured as a chessboard. Nothing about it is subtle, and nothing about it is dense.

The system takes that literally. An 8×8 grid carries the layout, flat colour fields carry the meaning, and the flag's yellow does the shouting. Everything is centred, because the place is.
