About Danish Skønvirke Silver
Skønvirke means "beautiful work," and in Denmark that work happened at the bench, not on the lithographic stone. Between 1895 and 1915 Bindesbøll, Ballin and the Copenhagen workshops around them raised brooches, clasps, beakers and bowls out of sterling sheet, planishing every surface with a rounded hammer until it held light like fog on water.
The drawing is done in shadow. Liver-of-sulphur patina sinks into the chased recesses while the raised planes stay bright, so form reads as depth rather than outline. Colour arrives only as stone — chrysoprase, amber, moonstone, labradorite, carnelian, malachite — bezel-set at the nodes where the tendrils turn.
