Balinese Lontar

ProMax

Lontar is the manuscript tradition of Bali: sacred Balinese-Hindu texts scratched into strips of dried palmyra palm leaf with a pengrupak stylus, the incised grooves then blackened with burnt-candlenut soot. The aesthetic is a warm tan-to-golden-brown leaf carrying sharp, angular, connected soot-black script, with rare touches of cinnabar red. Strips are pierced, threaded on cord, and clamped between carved wooden boards.

This design system translates that material into an interface: a golden-brown leaf field, near-black incised type, leaf-brown and cord-wood supporting tones, and disciplined cinnabar accents used only to mark and never to flood. Layout follows the long horizontal leaf strip rather than the upright paper page.
