Akuaba Akan Fertility Doll

The akua'ba is the carved wooden fertility figure of the Ashanti/Akan peoples of Ghana, made and carried before 1900 by women seeking a healthy, beautiful child. Its signature silhouette — a flat ringed disc-head balanced on a slender neck and columnar torso — is one of the most abstracted and recognizable forms in African sculpture, carved from hard osese wood and worked to a deep, glossy black-brown with oil.

This design language reads the akua'ba at its true material darkness: the polished near-black hardwood surface it is carved from, not a museum card or a floated white silhouette. Every surface, shadow, and accent stays inside the register of oiled wood grain, lit from one side like a single studio-lit carving, with a single warm gold bead accent standing in for the beaded earrings and waist strings worn by the figure.
