About Amateur Architecture Studio

Amateur Architecture Studio, founded by Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu in Hangzhou, builds with what demolition left behind. The Ningbo History Museum is wrapped in wa-pan walls: salvaged grey brick, black roof tile and porcelain shards laid by local masons, butting straight into concrete cast in bamboo formwork.

This system treats that sunlit wall as the page. Warm tile grey and cool concrete grey stay two materials, type sits directly on the masonry, and nothing floats.
