About Vietnamese Đông Hồ Woodblock关于 Vietnamese Đông Hồ Woodblock

Đông Hồ painting (Tranh Đông Hồ) is Vietnam's folk woodblock-print tradition — 400 years of Lunar New Year wallpaper churned out by Bắc Ninh village workshops, sold for pennies at Tết markets, hung on every village wall. Fat happy roosters, fertility-pigs with piglets, mouse-wedding satires, and Trưng Sisters hero-figures pressed onto pearlescent điệp paper sized with crushed seashell glaze.

The aesthetic is saturated mineral-pigment blocks — vermilion, cobalt, emerald, saffron — bounded by crisp lampblack outlines, with Chinese-character good-wish cartouches floating above. Cheerful, naïve, gently humorous, never reverent. Folk warmth printed cheap and hung for luck.
