Timorese Tais (Backstrap Loom)

ProMax

Timorese tais is the identity-saturated backstrap-loom textile of the lesser Sundas. Weavers tie warps to a tree and tension them against their bodies, producing narrow tube-form cloths whose ikat-resist patterns encode clan, district, and ceremonial rank — geometry that tells you which mountain a village sits on.

This design system translates the tais vocabulary into digital form: deep indigo-black ground, vermilion and saffron warp stripes, cream resist motifs of crocodile, gecko, and mountain zigzag, all rendered with the characteristic ikat blur of wax-resist edges.
