Timor-Leste Tais Buna

Tais buna is the supplementary-warp patterned cloth of Timor-Leste, woven on the backstrap loom by village women and figured with geometric motifs unique to each district. Often paired with futus warp-ikat, its colours are symbolic: red for sacrifice and liberation, black for triumph, yellow for the remnants of colonialism, white for peace.

This design system reads as a coloured tais ground — a deep natural-dye madder field, banded with black warp stripes and figured in ochre geometry. Nothing is blank cloth; every surface carries the weight of dyed, woven meaning.

Tais buna 是东帝汶的补充经纱花布，由村中妇女在背带织机上织就，每个地区都有独特的几何纹样。它常与 futus 经纱扎染并用，配色充满象征意义：红色代表牺牲与解放，黑色代表胜利，黄色代表殖民的残余，白色代表和平。

本设计系统呈现为一块染色的 tais 底布——深沉的天然茜草红地，缀以黑色经纱条带，以赭黄几何纹样点缀。没有一处是空白的布面；每一面都承载着染色、编织而成的意义。
