About Sogdian Fresco
Sogdian Fresco draws on the seventh- and eighth-century wall paintings of Panjakent, the merchant city of ancient Sogdiana. Cinnabar-red figures, lapis-blue robes, and ochre-gold ornament move across a deep red-ochre plaster ground in friezelike processions — caravans, banqueting nobles, and pearl-roundel borders.
It is a storytelling system: matte mineral pigment, horizontal narrative bands, and beaded medallions frame each scene the way a reception hall framed its painted world. The mood is warm, ceremonial, and ancient — the cosmopolitan Silk Road before the Arab conquest.
