About Plečnik's Ljubljana
Jože Plečnik treated a whole city as a single commission. Between the wars he re-laid the Ljubljanica embankments, threw three bridges where one had stood, colonnaded the market and raised the National and University Library out of rough clay brick studded with grey Podpeč limestone and salvaged Roman fragments.
The orders he quotes are never textbook-correct. Column, urn, pyramid and baluster are re-cut by hand into a private alphabet, then applied at river scale. This system inherits that logic: masonry ground, inscribed Roman capitals, bays that repeat, proportions that do not obey.
