About Shigeo Fukuda Optical
Shigeo Fukuda built posters the way a magician builds a trick: one sheet, one idea, and a figure that turns into something else the moment you notice the ground. Black printing ink on an unprinted white sheet — that is the entire material story.
The system takes him at his word. A near-white page, one ink, a small supporting set of flat spot colours, and a plain grotesque set small and kept out of the way. Nothing is shaded, nothing is textured, and the margin is never filled. What carries the design is the cut between figure and ground, and the second reading hiding inside it.
