The Russian izba is the log house of the countryside — stacked timber courses, a great masonry stove, and window-surrounds (nalichniki) carved in white fretwork over painted folk-blue. Blue meant sky and heaven in Slavic tradition, so the platband became a field of carved ornament: suns, birds, and lace cut by jigsaw. This system speaks in that voice — bright nalichnik-blue framing on a deep folk-blue ground, white limewash fretwork, a folk-red accent, and the warmth of bare pine.
