About Rarámuri Running
Rarámuri means something close to "those who run on foot". The running dress is plain hand-loomed manta cotton — an off-white zapeta and a blousy shirt — cinched by a densely patterned woven faja and topped by a red koyera headband. On the feet are akaka huaraches, soles cut from worn car tyres, laced with hide.
This system takes that structure literally. Wide flat cloth planes, one saturated red band, and hand-woven stripes that drift in width because a backstrap loom is not a machine. Numbers run large: the rarajipari is a village team race that can cross a hundred kilometres of canyon and run through the night.
